Explanation: RELATIVE CLAUSES.
A) DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES: These expressions couldn´t be left out.
Examples:
-Louisiana was seriously damaged by Hurricane Katrina WHICH left thousands of people homeless.
-He is the only person WHO understands me.
(In these 2examples the relative pronun functions as "subject", so in this case it cannot be omitted)
-I have lost my sunglasses (WHICH) I bought yesterday. (In this case, WHICH functions as "object), so it can be omitted)
B)NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES: They give extra information about the noun they qualify. They use commas1!!!
Examples:
-Nadal,WHO won his sixth Grand Slam tournament, defeated Federer last Sunday in Australia.
-Obama, WHO is the forty-fourth president of the USA, is the first African-American man ever elected.
-"Sunflowers", WHICH was painted by Vincent Van Gogh, will be exposed at El Prado Museum.
